The ground array manifold is usually installed externally on an outside wall with the heat pump on the other side of the wall internally. This minimises pipe runs and eases installation.
Mounting the manifold externally avoids problems with condensation, which can occur on any pipes mounted internally. To avoid this, the manifold would need to be fully insulated with a vapour barrier insulation, which is difficult and costly.
Manifolds are usually housed in a small custom built lean-to or recessed into a space built into the external wall.

It is possible to install manifolds in custom built pits; however this is not preferred due to a number of issues, which need to be considered, such as flooding, etc.
