Although heat pumps can be used to provide heat for any building, whether they are cost effective depends very much on the application. They are ideally suited for well insulated new build properties, with underfloor throughout, land to bury ground arrays and no access to gas. They can be used in older buildings and with radiators, however if your client is motivated by lower running costs we would always recommend that the building is brought up to modern insulation levels, as this will provide the maximum savings for money spent.
The type of fuel being replaced is also an important factor to consider. Gas is relatively cheap compared to other fuels and if you have access to this, the running costs needs to be carefully considered.
If your client is motivated by green issues then a heat pump has significantly lower CO2 emissions compared to traditional fossil fuels and this could help increase your client’s SAP (Standard Assessment Procedure) rating and help with Building Regulations Part L compliance.
