Heat pumps should be kept away from noise sensitive areas such as bedrooms. A heat pump makes a similar noise to an oil fired boiler or a running dishwasher.
An ideal position would be at the back of a garage or in a separate shed or outbuilding.
When a heat pump or a boiler is located externally, for example in a garage or other building remote from the dwelling, then the pipe runs between boiler and dwelling must be very well insulated. Often these pipes must run underground, under a garden path, yard, patio or driveway. There is no theoretical limit on distance between the plant and the building, but over a certain distance larger water pumps may be required.
